As a follow-up of the Pakistan - India Dialogue; Climate Change and Sustainable Development in October 2010, the Pakistan - India Track II, (Climate) Change for Peace offered another opportunity to enhance the dialogue between the two neighboring countries.

The participants resolved that India and Pakistan share the same eco-system and therefore the impacts of climate change are not only a common challenge but also a chance for collaboration.

The dialogue was organized by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE - New Delhi) and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI - Islamabad) and sponsored by Heinrich-Boll-Stiftung, Pakistan and India offices. It took place in Islamabad from 13th to 15th February 2012 and brought together more than 150 participants from academia and public institutions working in field of environment and in the energy sector, environmental NGOs and media.

Taking advantage of the present improved India-Pakistani relations, this dialogue had the objective to strengthen the cooperation and to develop an actionable agenda to deal with the impacts of climate change in both countries.

The first day was dedicated to urgent issues of water and energy. In the second day participants dealt with the issues of adaptation, gender and livelihoods in the light of climate change challenges.

Dr. Adil Najam, LUMS Vice-President, gave a special lecture on green economy as well as an insight about lessons-learnt and perspectives of the Rio process.

Climate change as a non-traditional security threat was the subject of the third day before the participants joined in an interactive session to produce a declaration. This final document identifies the present and future challenges for India and Pakistan regarding climate change and recommends policy advice on how to give a common response.
