Annie James

Annie is a doctoral student at the Institute of Environmental Science & Technology at the UniversitatAutònoma de Barcelona, Spain (ICTA-UAB). Her academic engagement with conservation and political ecology began in 2015 during her MA studies at the University of Sussex (Institute of Development Studies). For her PhD she is investigating ideas within anti-capitalism and post-capitalism as they apply to forest conservation practices; her empirical work for the doctoral thesis is focussed on forests in Western India. She aims to conceptualise alternatives to fortress and neoliberal conservation, simultaneously situating such alternatives within the wider systemic demand for an anti-capitalist transformation. Annie is from India and has worked there with non-profits for 6+ years on issues of social and environmental justice.
