Dr. Katharina Emschermann

Dr. Katharina Emschermann leads the EU and International Politics Programme at the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union | Global Dialogue office in Brussels. 

Katharina is a senior foreign policy analyst and political advisor with over 14 years of work experience in politics and academia. Her areas of expertise include European/German foreign and security policy, transatlantic relations, as well as multilateral policy-making amidst geopolitical shifts.

Prior to joining the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Katharina was the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the parliamentary group of the then-governing Alliance 90/The Greens in the German parliament, where she coordinated all foreign policy initiatives. She has also served as Deputy Director of the Centre for International Security at the Hertie School in Berlin. From 2015 to 2020, Katharina was the foreign policy advisor, head speechwriter and intermittent chief of staff to former Federal Minister for the Environment Jürgen Trittin MdB. As a researcher at the University of Bremen, 2011-2015, she worked on the internationalisation of security and strategic communication.

Katharina holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Bremen, an M.A. in International Relations from the Free University Berlin, and a B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Regensburg. She is fluent in German, English, and French.
